HMV Contemporary 1954
Welcome lovers of vinyl and mid century furniture we have an uber groovy mid century number to drop on you
After a long battle we finally have this one fully restored and back to perfect working order, a challenge indeed but very rewarding.
Why the challenge surely it wasn’t that hard?
Well, we take pride in restoring these Radiograms back to 100% original condition, we carefully rebuild the amplifier and replace hard to source original parts to ensure its authenticity. After 72 years this one was a hat trick indeed.
As much as I love the 1950’s radiograms I am however not actively searching for them as they’re generally quite bulky. But, I HAD to have this one, it is such an uncommon rare model. A Mid-Century masterpiece of design and function.
Made in 1954 (stamped) HMV Contemporary 32-43 Radiogram, no photos online exist of this model. the cabinet is hand crafted of fine materials, no chipboard, all plywood construction with real wood teak veneer and hard wood. On board Receiver and stacking turntable housed in hidden draws that slide out to reveal the goodies. Angled slatted wood panels pretty the front of the draws for that raw MCM design. The bottom of the cabinet has a fold down door which houses all your favourite records which could easily fit up to 100 vinyl.
The valve amplifier has been fully restored by us in our warehouse, all electrolytic and wax/paper capacitors have been replaced with high quality units (not cheap Chinese), all faulty drifting resistors have also been replaced with quality units. All valves cleaned and tested, 6M5 output replaced, Speaker transformer upgraded to a ROLA 3.5ohm which is appropriate to the original amp design. We also upgraded the 6BE6 to a 5750 which is a premium equilavent.
Also incorporated in this wonder-beast is a BSR UA14 in pristine condition, full restored. Fresh idler wheel, replacement rubber matt, all new grease and lubrication, aligned and set. Brand new Cartridge and Stylus converted to stereo (from mono) adapted the audio lines now playing in stereo through the single ended valve system and sounding superb. Fully automatic one touch system allowing you to stack up to 6 records and this machine will stack them down one at a time and play on for hours.
Has AM radio and picks up stations beautifully .
